How do people start non profit corporations as members of the board of directors and end up making all the $?
Q. I have always wondered how people who claim to be "non profit" say they are just that, yet on the side they say they're the "owner", and they make all the money off the so called non profit. When you incorporate as part of the member of the board of directors, aren't you forbidden from being compensated for being on the board? How does all that work?

A. The board should not be making money from the organization. One's time for serving on the board should not be in return for pay -- in fact, most board members provide some of the funding for an organization. Whether it's against the law or not, it's the industry standard that nonprofit board members are NOT paid, and your email is a perfect illustration of why paying board members at nonprofit organizations is a very bad idea, from a PR standpoint. However, I take issue with the other poster who said that her Executive Director makes more than 100K a year and that she thinks that's unreasonable. The ED is not a board member -- he or she is the head of the organization. Salaries are based on the responsibilities a person has and the… [cont.]

How and when you split the profit when you invest to a company?
Q. I'd like to invest some money instead of borrowing to my brother's company . How is that going to work? Do I get the profit every profit every month? If I change my mind can I always get the initial money I put?

A. It sounds like he is a small business owner (or is planning to be). When you buy a stock, you buy a teensie tiny piece of a business. If that business pays dividends then you get a profit from it. But in most cases the primary profit (or loss) in a stock comes from the value of the stock itself. Whatever happens to the price of the stock is considered 'unrealized' gains or losses until you sell it, then it becomes 'realized'. But if you are 'investing' in a small business, you would have to work out between the two of you (and probably with the assistance of an attorney - not just from a business angle but from a tax angle as well) work out what percentage of the business you are buying from him, what kind of a return you expect (and… [cont.]

Should profit motive be in the same room as a dying cancer patient?
Q. Maybe for the medical equipment manufacturers who need profit to keep their factories running. But how about for the doctors, nurses and other care givers. Should the profit motive be on their minds when somebody's mother is dying? I say profit motive for the inanimate objects only.

A. Yes. When you work for free get back to me about this. You are saying you want doctors and nurses to be slaves with no pay, hypocrite.

"For the corporation executives, the military metaphysic often coincides with their interest in a stable and planned flow of profit; it enables them to have their risk underwritten by public money; it enables them reasonably to expect that they can exploit for private profit now and later, the risky research developments paid for by public money. It is, in brief, a mask of the subsidized capitalism from which they extract profit and upon which their power is based.”
