The definition of an artist is wide-ranging and covers a broad spectrum of activities to do with creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art. The normal meaning in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is certainly valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.

Is it normal for artists to fall into a bit of depression after they have finished a project?
Q. I'm an artist and I created something really different and beautiful a fews days ago. A few people have commented on how wonderful and very clever it is, but i couldn't sleep stressing that it wasn't good enough. Is it normal for artists to fall into a bit of depression after they have finished a project? Thanks.

A. Yeah, I think so. It's not just artists either, when you're working on anything thats important to you then you are focused, you are working towards a goal. When you finally achieve that goal then you get a sense of satisfaction and pride. However, as you have been so focused on this one thing, once it is completed it is natural to feel a bit empty without it. It'll pass, my advice would be to start a new project as soon as possible!

Does anyone know of any famous contemporary artists who specialize in figurative work?
Q. Someone with their main body of work between the 1970's - today. I need to do a research paper. I'm particularly interested in Catholic or Christian artists but any noteworthy artist who does figurative work (or does portraiture) would be of interest to me. Someone who I could find a lot of information on would be good.
